Why I don’t promote work-life balance...

Transilience Issue #008: A sacred path to amplify your impact

Transilience (noun.)

Fostering transformation resilience through times of change. To leap across a threshold, and in the process of leaping, you become someone new.

The conversation around work-life balance is outdated, flawed, and ineffective.

Here's why...

At the end of the kickoff call for Imperfectionist (my free 8-day challenge that you can still join) a woman asked how to navigate the discrepancy between being "personal" vs. "professional" on social media because clients might be watching.

This type of question comes up a lot.

And I love it because it points to the underlying dysfunction of work-life balance.

Of course the conversation around work-like balance was a huge step in the right direction to address and combat the burnout epidemic running rampant.

But "work-life balance" as a concept emerged from an underlying dysfunctional system; like trying to put a bandaid on a rash that is caused by your diet rather than address the underlying cause.

I think the challenge comes with perceiving a "discrepancy" in the first place, which creates internal division and the pursuit of work-life separation, which from my perspective is unachievable (nor would I want it to be.)

I think a much healthier approach is embracing work-life integration, a pathway toward closing the gap between who we really are and how we show up in the world, rather than widening it.

I'm a visual learner and if you are too, imagine yourself standing up straight.

I consider work-life balance on a horizontal axis and work-life integration on a vertical axis.

Let me explain...

Work-life balance means having your work life on one hand and your personal life on the other, regarding them as separate.

It's horizontal: left vs right.

You need to be this person, and then you need to switch and become that person.

You need to be on, and then you need to be off.

There is a division embedded in the "work-life balance" narrative that creates a chasm that is difficult to bridge and exhausting to maintain...ironically...leading many toward burnout.

I see work-life integration on a vertical axis from head to toe where your mind, body, heart, hands and voice are all aligned with the trueessence and expression of who you really are.

You are one integrated human being here to create, inspire, learn, love, grow, make a meaningful contribution and live your life to it's fullest expression.

This means learning how to become more fully you.

To me, this notion of embodying integrated alignment from head to toe is synonymous with integrity.

Indeed, integration and integrity both share the same etymological root pointing us home toward our inherent wholeness.

Integration & Integrity

Both words derive from the Latin word "integer," which means the act of making something whole or complete by combining different parts into a unified whole. Undivided. Complete.

This shift from work-life balance toward work-life integration mirrors the shift we are witnessing from “Niching Down” to becoming your Niche of One.

Both are easier said than done.

Leading from your center of truth, owning your worth and embodying your wholeness requires healing your wounds and being willing to befriend yourself just as you are.

It's about accepting and embracing yourself as perfectly imperfect, despite your flaws, fumbles, limitations, wounds.

It's about putting down the mask, the armor, and the myriad ways we protect ourselves from being seen.

But when we have the courage to embrace our imperfections and show up despite our fears of criticism or judgement, something transformative happens.

Not just for you but for the people around you, too.

In the over-saturation of fake everything...people are desperate for real connection. We are longing to connect with others who are willing to show up as themselves.

True authenticity feels like a breath of fresh and a massive sigh relief.

People feel truth. We feel it when someone is being real, genuine, and authentic. We feel a sense of belonging.

Any you just can't fake any of that.

When we connect with others in this exposed and vulnerable way, we weave the threads of our shared humanity because we experience resonance.

We remember that we all struggle, that we all suffer, that we all long for love, that we are all trying to make sense of what means to be alive on planet earth through these bizarre times of change (and getting weirder by the day...)

And when we connect to the raw, real tenderness of our shared humanity, we not only heal ourselves, but we heal together.

That's been the beauty of watching this incredible ripple effect of the free 8-day Imperfectionist challenge I launched a few days ago.

If you want to see what I mean, just tune into my Instagram Stories.

(Seriously, it's worth checking out. It's incredibly inspiring.)

Hundreds of people are choosing to move a little closer to sharing the truth of who they really are, and by doing that, they are giving other people permission to love and accept themselves more fully too.

This is why I consider social media just as sacred as the medicine path I walk. Showing my face on Instagram is just as sacred and just as healing and transformative as sitting down for my meditation practice.

Any path you walk in this life is sacred if you choose it to be.

That's why Essence my 4-month mastermind starting August 1st, is a different take on showing up for social media, magnetizing an audience, and birthing an offering so unique it stands alone.

It's about walking the sacred path of entrepreneurship that embraces our own inner healing and transformation...because there is no separating the two.

Your message is also your medicine.

Who we are and what we offer the world are one and the same.

That's integrated alignment.

And it's about time we step up and embody this transformative shift, because I truly believe becoming more fully ourselves is our pathway toward collective healing and liberation. And that's what I'm in service to.

If this resonates with you, I would love for you to join me for...
